Sock Monkeys

Nothing like a little misplaced confidence . . .

So, I thought a little project for my trip would be a good idea.  My nephew's wife had never heard of sock monkeys and my adorable twin grand-nephews were about to turn 1 - I know, I'll hand sew a couple of sock monkeys for them on my trip!  Never mind that I had never actually seen a sock monkey myself (I did know where to get the socks!) . . . haven't sewn anything since high school home EC - I'm sure that won't be a problem! (Uh, well, perhaps the D on my report card should have rung at least a small alarm bell).  But no, I was filled with confidence and affection for two little baby boys I could already imagine dragging around a sock monkey, teathing on its ears, pulling off a tail and leaving sock monkey stuffing in their wake.

Two observations . . .

The instructions for making a sock monkey that come with the socks are surprisingly clear.  This clarity does not make up for the lack of a sewing machine and some rudimentary skill.  Not to  mention sewing supplies (pins would have been nice; some kind of markers so that pieces could have been measured and made the same size).

Hand sewing anything takes a lot longer than one might think!

Oh, a third observation - I can be remarkably stubborn.

Anyway, the sock monkeys turned out adorable. Where did you find the socks with instructions?

    1. I got the socks at an army surplus store - but they're made by Fox River and are called 'Original Rockford Red Heel' and the instructions come with them. Other patterns are on http://www.foxsox.com/catalog/category.aspx?code=ROCK

  2. Did you make one without ears? They are very cute and they look like you knew what you were doing. I'm sure the boys won't see any imperfections in your sewing skills. What does FW think of them?

    1. They both have ears - one just has a smaller head with a bigger hat that covers his ears.
FW ignores them -she also ignores the little Valentine teddy bear toy I got her (too bad, cause it's white just like her).
